Dimmer for 12 v lights

dnp

Question

I have recently installed an automotive dome light in my Otter and would like to be able to control the brightness. So far I have been unable to find a rheostat for 12 volts 1.5 amps. I think my best bet would be an automotive dash light dimmer with a round knob controller. Any ideas on where to find one?

GM makes a perfect one. I think they are under 10 bucks. Its a separate unit from the headlight switch unlike many. It is a small rectangular shape and has a "flush mount" look to it. You can find them in many of their vehicles. The best example would be in an S-10 or a Chev Astro van. I can get a part number if you want........ smile.gif

dnp.... WELCOME to Fishing Minnesota!!

Another place to look for a 12V dimmer is marine and RV dealers. House systems on large watercraft as well as RV's typically run on 12V. These however may be a bit on the spendy side. I kind of like the idea of an automotive dimmer. I did a quick web search for 12 volt dimmers and came up with quite a few pages....

Do I sense another mod for the Otter? Hmmmm....

I am in the opposite situation. I installed three oval 12v lites in my fish trap, several years ago. They are great for fishing, not to bright. But they are a bit dim for tying 4lb. fluro to a #10 hook. My suggestion would be to install a couple of smaller lights for fishing and leave the dome light for when you get older and can't see, like me grin.gif . I think I will opt for some type of headlamp. It will help when I am walking off the lake in the dark as well.

The part # we use is 1995394 (GM) or an A-1507

They are one in the same .....

Better yet....If you are near a junk yard you could probably pick one up for little or nothing and they are common as mosquitoes in the summer.

Good luck...let us know how it works out! smile.gif

Hey Liar, I am old like you and need all the light I can get to tie a knot, that's why I opted for the dome light from MFF. It has a # 1141 bulb which is very bright. I liked the amount of light compared to the rope lights and opted for the brighter. However it is too bright for normal night time fishing.

Macgyver, thanks for the info. I will pick one up and let you guys know how it works. Thanks to all who replied.

P.S. to Liar. I purchased a new headlight this year and really like it. It is a Rayovac with red and white LED and also a flashlight style light. Got it a Menards for $10. Works great.
