braves57
Tip-up question. What do you like to use on a tip-up (hook or jig and size of hook/jig and bait) for northerns? What about walleyes? I'm looking for other options besides a BIG hook and shiner... and I've never specifically fished tip-ups for walleyes. Thanks guys!
Goosepimp
Plain hook and fathead minnow work great for tip-up walleyes. Usually use a 6lb mono leader.
shorefisher
For me a plain hook gets more hits then a jig. Shorefisher

catchnmall
I make up my own leaders with treble hooks on the ends with 3 to 4 colored beads on top of the hook. You can buy these in stores but they are very easy to make and a little cheaper.
Eastwind
Braves,For walleye I use a plain hook with a minnow at the end of a 10' to 15' 6# mono leader. For northern I use a Quick Strike Rig and a large shiner or sucker minnow.
frabillfisher
For eyes i would almost always go with a #2 white moonglow with 10 to 12 pound leader...maybe something a little bigger if the northerns are coming in to..also a sucker minnow or a nice big shiner
braves57
what size hook do you use for walleyes? My northern hooks seem WAY too big?
Eastwind
I use #6 with shiner size minnows and #8 with smaller minnows.
Bob_D
For northers I use 4' of 50# floro and a #2 Mustad 3551 with one point removed (making it a double hook). I release almost all of my fish, so the double hook is easier to remove, but it still allows good hookups. I tend to use 4"-7" bait where I fish. No a lot of big fish, so anything bigger is a waste of money for me. Yes, 18" pike will take a 12" sucker. For walleye I use 6' of 15# maxima ultragreen and a #8 Mustad 3551. I hit the walleye pretty quickly and almost never have a swallowed hook. I use small goldens (3") or large emeralds and hunts.
walldoggie
If i am fishing for northers i like to either use a plain hook with a leader and at the top ot the leader i connect a silver or gold colorado blade kinda as a flasher to attract um over works for walleye too other wise i use a plain hook with the colorado blade down by the hook both have worked well for me.
