loebs93
I was just curious to see how many people winter camp at all. I have really gotten big into it in the past five years and I am heading to St. Croix state park on Monday to practice some more. The coldest temperature I have ever slept in was -17 F. Hopfully it won't be that cold this comming week. Does anybody go to the BWCA, the Superior Hiking Trail or out west to the moutains? Just looking to share some tips and ideas to cope with the cold temps.
fishermn
I've done a fair amount. Not so much in the real cold temps, maybe down as much as -10. The best thing I have found for staying warm in all temps are the Remington fleece long underwear. Man those things are toasty. A bit bulky, but I havent ever seen anything that compares. We fished sag two years ago on a day that was about -20, It wasnt expected to get that cold on our trip, so I didnt have my insulated bibs all I had were those fleece pants and jeans. Even in that nasty cold, I stayed reasonably warm even on the 12 mile sled ride out and back. If you can afford it the best way to stay warm at night is a canvas tent with wood stove. They take a bit of work to set up, but there is nothing better as far as staying warm.
Maxwell
I like camping in the parks that are open in the winter or the Superior hiking trail. I think the superior hiking trail rates up on my top 5 list to camp though in the winter.
fishermn
A few more items I thought of after my last post. Yes I have done all three areas you mentioned, although I have not done the SHT during the winter. Mostly during the spring/fall. One of the best things you can invest your money in is a really good, warm, light sleeping bag. My preference is for a bag thats good down to about 20F, which is really comapct and lightweight. If the temps are going to be much below 10 -20, I will bring another bag and sleep inside both. Another post also mentioned using a closed cell sleeping pad. That is a must. You really need fairly good insulation between you and the ground.
psegriz
Have not done it b4 but have plans for a trip to the bwca on the 27th. Am looking forward to it. I've went and got some warm clothes and a real warm sleepin bag. The guy who is takin me said his coldest night was-37 without a tent. He also said there wasn't anything comfortable about it. Hopfully for this fishin trip temps will be a little better than that.
