rice lake area ice fishing

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any suggestions on where to ice fish around Rice Lake for walleyes and/or crappies? I am going to be in the area the week after christmas visiting some friends and was looking to get out on the ice. Any suggestions? Would I be better off going up around Hayward?

Chiro---Are you talking about Rice Lake by Yellow River....off of highway H? If so, that lake is a very shallow lake. Most of the lake is not much more than 5-6 feet deep. There are walleyes out there....but 90% of the time you will be pulling snakes off the tip-ups. As of crappies I dont think its much of a lake....good gill lake though and can catch some jumbo perch every now and then. We have a cabin on the river and know this lake very well. Its a fun lake if you got a bunch of flags out for pike. We go on the oppisite side of the launch/bar(which might be blocked off now) and put flags on the south west area. I might see you out there this winter. Good luck

There are a couple bait shops in the Rice Lake area. I think Bear Paw is one on Hwy 48. They will give you the best advice. There is also some good lakes in the Birchwood area. 20 some miles from Rice Lake.

Thanks for the info guys, I am not sure if the yellow river is same rice lake I am thinking of. I was referring to the town of Rice Lake, Wi. I have been to a wedding reception on Red Cedar lake(?) up by Birchwood and have heard there might be good fishing there, but not for sure. There are so many lakes in that area of the state, there has to be something worthwhile to fish. I will try to talk to my buddy and see if he knows anyone who ice fishes, he is a big musky fisherman and I dont think he does any ice fishing. Anyway, thanks for the help.
