buzbunni
I wonder if any of you have any experience with the any of the power fish scaling units that various manufacturers are selling. Also, how do you clean fish at home? Specifically the scaling process. Being in the city, I'm wondering how I might scale/clean the fish in the house without having to power wash the walls to get the scales off afterward. Tips anyone....Buehler...anyone??? mpester
I skin the fish I keep so I have no scales flying all over the garage.
The Grebe
Everything gets filleted, even the trout...if it is'nt big enough to be filleted, I don't keep it.In the past, I would occassionally scale sunnies...in the sink, under water, with a fork and even at that, I would sometimes miss a few scales, so I would think that you would still have to go over and fine tune the fish after using the auto scaler? Another thing I was thinking about when I was looking at the scalers out at Fleet farm...I was wondering if it would "tenderize" the fish with the constant contact and flogging? Duffer
i have always scaled the fish in the front yard and left the scals in the grass the disaper fast and decompose so i dont have to get my house all full of it.
efgh
A handy fish scaler can be made out of 3/16 plastic, I got the plastic from M&M signs in Mankato, Mn., cut the plastic one in. wide by 8 ins. long, heat the strip one in. from the end, bend 90 degree angle, let cool, heat plastic strip 3/4 in up from 90 degree bend, bend down to about 70 degrees, sharpen the one in. end on top side. it should look like a little shovel, to use hold head of croppie or sunfish flat on a table, start at the tail and push towards the head, the scales will all build up on the one in. part. but it works.
