Last June we went to White Otter for the opener, we had a great time, caught more walleye than we could keep track of, the weather was perfect. When we got back to the "landing" every vehicle with license plates from MN, WI, ND, any rig without a Canada plate was scratched/keyed with the most vulgar pictures and words I've ever seen. "Go home **** Suckers, F off Minnesota, drawings of "the finger" scratched into our hoods and sides of our trucks, it was pathetic. Why would anyone do this??? As a group we spent more than a $1,000.00 in Atikokan, we kept 10 fish that we ate at our camp site, and didn't bring ANY fish home. Someone please let me know what that was all about.

My guess would be alcohol was involved. I have been going up there for quite a few years now and the one thing I have noticed is that there are two kinds of folks up there. There are the ones who realize that the dollars that come with us are important to their economy and even if it was not, they are still generally friendly people. The other type I am speaking of have more problems than just Americans visiting Canada. For how breathtaking of a place it can be, the poverty, alcohol and drug abuse is pretty incredible. Now I am not trying to push any buttons here, our own country has some issues to (just look at the Leech Lake Res report in the Trib) but this is just an outsiders perspective.

We also have had problems at the landing on Clearwater West. we came in and our truck wasn't where we had parked and after a short walk found it smashed against a tree.
that was almost 30 years ago and we have gladly paid Barry's cheap insurance to put in and park at the resort. I agree that it is not a unique problem for that spot. I was camping on Tofte near Ely and came out to drive into town to find that evry overseas model truck and car had the tires slashed and paint jobs keyed.

Luckily I have not had any damage to my car but I have had a few run in's a couple of times. We used to go to the bar in a town we would stay at, but I no longer feel safe doing that. I also read some of the local papers up there and recently they have been painting some pretty bad pictures of the area. One resort owner, I know, will not hire any locals because of the alcoholism . Our first time up there we paid a tip to our guides the 1st day we fished, well the owner of the resort told us that we shouldn't have done that because the guides would not be back. The next morning we got up and ready, the guides, they where a no show. But as I mentioned in my earlier post, this kind of thing is happing all over, not just in Canada. My brother-in-law's good friend was murdered a couple years ago by some teens from the Leech Lake res. Something has to be done on both sides of the border. What exactly can be done, I do not know.....
