The Red's warming up!

Things are becoming more and more interesting on the Red as the fall season fast approaches. There are reports of decent walleye being caught over the past serveal days. These reports coincide with what I've been predicting all along.
With the infestation of emerald shiners into the river, the walleye run could be a real boomer this fall! We should hear reports during the next couple of weeks of "BIG" eyes being caught, eyes in the double digits.
I said once and I'll say it again, only time will tell for sure if the "Fall Classic" will be productive, personally I think it going to HOT!

I hope your right Stu. With the way low water I'm kinda wondering what it'll be like. 99 we had excellent fishing and the water was kinda high and flowing pretty good. The past couple years it's been a bit on the low and slow side and the fishing ai'nt quite like I remember in past years with better levels and flows. Time will tell and I'll be up there fishing regardless. Same with the Rainy river fall bite....Seems when the water is low and slow we don't see quite the run that we do in higher water years.

The "key" here is bait fish, emerald shiners! If their presence remains strong, the walleye will follow them into the river.
The one key element that's been missing for the past few falls is the emerald. We've had good flows in recent years but the walleye were few and far between.
Once again, my comments are only based on my own personal observations. They're all I really have to go on. Over the past several weeks, I couldn't but help notice the extemely large population of emerald shiners in the system. It's been many years since I've seen the river so infested with them! It only stands to reason that the walleye should follow their food source.

Once again, time will only tell!

How is the bite progressing Stu? Steady by jerks, or fair to good?

Have you and Don been getting out and testing the waters?

I got the Walleye "Bug", now I just need to get free to cure it. With good weather I should be up in about 7-10 days.

The action is slow here on the Red as well as the Winnipeg.......
So far the patterns are similar to the past couple of years. There's the odd trophy being caught from time to time, but over all
it's proving to be a tough grinding affair.
There's a strong presence of sauger in the river with anglers producing high numbers of them.
Don't get the wrong impression, there are walleye to be had, they just don't seem to be in great numbers. Those who are producing are those who seem to be pounding the same location over and over. This applies to trolling methods as well as jigging methods. To often anglers will make a pass or two thru an area and if they're not successful they'll move on. More times than not their chances for success is limited. Those that choose to continuously and throughly grind an area are usually the ones that enjoy some success.

Was up to the Red last Thurs. afternoon until Sunday noon.

Here are the numbers. Thurs. 3 Greenbacks-biggest 23 1/2 , Friday 5
greenbacks- Two between 8 and 9 lbs, Saturday 19 greenbacks-biggest 8 1/2 lbs several in the 17-23" range
and a couple at 25 1/2". Sunday 8 greenbacks-biggest 10 1/4 lbs with the others up to 23 1/2" .

Two boats, four guys. Jig fishing with salties and using crankbaits.
Crankbaits had the edge.

Two other boats up there I knew reported slow but each day had one between 8 and 10 lbs. I saw a few other big ones
caught in that 5-8 lb range and heard of a couple other 28-29" fish caught.

I hear the crankbait bite has picked up again. Or is jigs the deal yet, or both?

Did the release at the Dam muddy things up any? I suspect with the low velocity of the flow it was not too bad?
