Hey guys, I'll be in the Granby area this weekend and was wondering how the bite has been? Also have a few questions since I've never fished there. First, what's the lightest line you would feel comfortable using? I know there are some pretty good sized fish there, but handling bigger fish on lite line isn't too bad as long as the drag is set right. What's the minimum you guys would use? 2nd: How is the wind usually? I know Colorado weather is almost impossible to predict, but I'm trying to decide if I should bring my house or not. Some areas have a tendincy to be windier that others. For example, I would never even consider going to 11-mile without a shelter, however, I've never needed it at Stagecoach. 3rd, are there any times of the day where you've generally noticed a better bite? Some lakes it's purely early morning and evening, others it really does't matter. I haven't fished the Macs very much, so was wondering if there is generally a time when they are alittle more active.(we all know this is difficult to predict for any fish, but species do have certain tendencies) Finally, There's another little resevoir 2 miles off the road right before Lake Granby(on the left) I've forgotten the name, Has anyone fished this? Any other info would be greatly appreciated. And hope everyone has a great MLK weekend in advance!
John

John,

If you've never fished it before I'd go for the easy money. Just before the lake you will see a sign to Arapahoee bay. Just take that road and follow it to the pay station. Once there pay your parking fees and you'll see a road almost directly across from it heading towards the lake. Take that road to the boat launch where you'll be able to park. Just park there and walk down to the lake. Anywhere off that point you'll get into fish. I like fishig more to the right almost around the point, but you'll do good anywhere. I've been there when the lake trout hit all day but usually you'll be into them from day light to noon. You will also many times get a good afternoon stretch there from 3 or so on so it can be all day fishing action. Jigs with sucker meat is the ticket and I like white or pearl for colors. We usually get some decent fish out there but this year I've caught nothing over 20 inches for some reason but I've only been once. I will be going this weekend again. Most people like using 10lb test, but if you're setup for trout just put a 10 foot leader on with say 10LB test. Last weekend we had 6 and 8 lb lines and on the six pound setups I just put a 10ft leader of 8lb on. The biggest issue with light line is having it slip from the hook with a good fish on. Hope you get some.

Thanks Chad, I've got 6lb Vanish on most of my rods, so the leader route is what I'll do. I was figuring on using 2-4in. tubes, I've always caught Lakers on White. Do you ever use any metal? Kastmasters,Pimples Etc. Weather shouldn't be a problem this weekend, but you never know.

I've never used metal up there. Can't say it won't work, but the jigs work fine so I stay with them. Plus metal means you catch them. I like the jigs when you loose them 5 times before you get them to the hole. Just kidding. I'll be up as well. Will have two girls maybe the wife but I'll be there. The weather is way to nice to let it pass.

Hey John! A guy I work with told me that you couldn't catch a fish if they were stocked in your toilet! Why drive all that way:-)

p.s. For all of you that think I'm being rude, John is a good fishing buddy of mine and I'm just having a little fun...

Can anyone tell me how much snow is on the ice at Granby?? I am heading up this weekend, and do not have a snowmobile. It can be brutal pulling my Trap Guide over alot of snow. Also, I have never been to Arapahoe Bay. Is the access to the lake real difficult? I know I sound like an old whinner, cause I am!!
Thank You for any information.

Not much snow at all. Almost not enough in some places. Be careful the ice is very very slippery (go figure)and if you have some of those spikes for your boots all the better. You can get down to the ice very easy there. You can walk down the big hill or go through the woods which is a little less steep. Good luck I'll be out with my wife and two daughters.

Hey Reg:

It's good to see some humor....Good fishing buddies are hard to find! John, don't feel bad there are days I feel like I couldn't catch a fish stocked in my toilet! I hope that's not the case this weekend! Have a great weekend of fishing!

Yeah, you can get it in Granby on the main street on the right kind of high priced though and it opens at 6am. If you live in the Denver area the Sportsmans warehouse is the best place I've found to get it. You can get a ton of it for 3.99 plus its like a big Walmart but with outdoor stuff only. The one I get it from is off of 25 and 86thish? Bills bait off of 58th and 25 has it as well for about 6 bucks.

Thanks Guys, we have a sportsmans warehouse here in Loveland, so we'll probably hit it here before we leave. Maybe we'll see you guys up there, if not hope everyone has a great weekend.

Fished granby 1-11 and caught small macks, rainbows and even kokanee in 10 foot of water from the same hole. Got tired of catching small macks and went to 32 foot to catch some bigger lakers. Took a little walk but it was worth it. One was around 8 pounds and another nice one also. Only spent about a hour out there, but it is fun just to watch them come through on the finder and finally coax them into hitting.

We fished Granby on Sunday. We fished off that point that runs parallel to the Dike 3. Between two of us we caught over 30 lake trout, but none of them were over 20 inches. We caught them in 26 foot all the way out to 40 feet deep. We caught them on dead minnows or sucker meat. Deadsticking a dead minnow seemed to get them to bite the fastest. Jigging a gold castmaster also worked. White 4" tube with sucker meat would also get them, but dang if I didn't lose a lot of fish. Lost one that was probably 3 or 4 pounds at the hole, but that's just another fish story.

Well, me and my mouth should've gone fishing with John! I drove up to Valentine, NE for a few Northerns and one small perch. I bow to your superiority, John!

Eric....

We all love a great fish story because if you have fished long enough you know that a good deal of them are true. I lost a huge "fish story" on Saturday at Stagecoach.

John,

I'm glad you had a great time. We fished Saturday and it was a bit slow, but we still go into them. The first few fish were about 20 inches and pretty fat so that was a great way to start off but then they went to the hammer handle type quickly. I'm not sure if you know or not (sure you found out) but if you loose those lakers on the way up or even at the hole open the bale and drop it down right away (soon as you loose them) because many times you'll hook up again. I lost a nice one last year right in the hole dropped the line down and he hit it about 3 feet under the ice. Once again good job.

Man, what a beautiful weekend up in Granby!! The weather was absoultly perfect. Fished Sun morning and till 2 on Monday and caught lots of Macks! Nothing huge is size, but made up for it in #s. Biggest was 21" several 19-20, and at least 40, 15-18inches. Fished 43Ft of water, picked most of them right off the bottom. 4in. white tubes with sucker meat was the way to go. I put them on both rods, and had quite a few doubles! Chad, missed you Saturday, but thanks for the easy money! Just fished right off the middle of the first point and was thourghly entertained. Maybe next time I'll do alittle exploring. Saw one real nice one in the parking lot that was caught across the lake(towards the highway) in 22ft. of water. First time fishing Granby, but I'll surely be back, what a blast! With all the fish I caught, I probably lost just as many, about half way up. Those suckers were pretty clever at getting off the jig. I seemed to get many more strikes with a slight twitch or a slight constant jig. Then I'd lift it up about 5ft then let it fall down to the bottom, and they'd nail it! Deadsticking caught a few fish,(when I was tired of jigging two rods!) but jigging was way more productive!

Granby was great today. Fished 37' of water over near Deer Island. Fished 2- 1/2" and 3- 1/2" Glow white tubes tipped with sucker meat. Action was red hot till about 11:00 and then slowed considerbly after that.Ended up catching 41 macs. Caught 1 rainbow also. Where are the big guys? Good luck next weekend to all,
Dan
