Lew
I'm a Minnesotan with a question for our neighbors to the south. What could I expect to find fishing in the St. Ansgar area this spring. I generally enjoy wading for smallies. What river is it that flows through St. Ansgar? Thanks for any info.------------------Lew
supserdave
You should do well finding smallies in the st. ansgar area. It is the cedar river. It is a catch and release zone there to, good luck.Dave

jerad_s
i am from osage, which is about 10 miles fro st. ansgar....i have fished the cedar river from almost the minnesota border to south of orchard....you can find smallies, northern, and in the last few years walleye...the walleye have come on in the last few years...i bet i caught 20-25 last year where in past years i was lucky to get 2...i only got to fish the cedar a handful of times last summer too...if i was you i would brind a canoe and explore the cedar...bring some white power grubs and some #5 shallow shad rap in orange craw pattern...also some original rapalas....keep it hush hush about the #5 shad rap...that is my go to bait all summer...early in the year the white grubs do better
supserdave
During higher spring flows a canoe would be nice. During mid summer waders would be fine to. Good luck.

Doop
Jerad_S what's your name? I grew up in Riceville and my best friend teaches and lives in Osage. My name is Mitch Jensen and last July I moved to Dallas,Tx. I miss the snow.Lew, if I were you....I'd fish right below the dam in Saint just as soon as the ice disappears with dead chubs or suckers under a bobber. There are plenty of northerns in there and I always meant to get over there to try it and never did. Good smallie fishing...make sure you release them...it's a C&R zone down to the Mitchell Dam. Good Luck and let me know how you do!

98prosport
This is really amazing. Here I am in northern Mn. and reading about my favorite fishing spot down in St. Ansgar Ia. I have spent many hours sitting on the concrete walls down at the ****, both ****s!! Mitchell and St. Ansgar. If you ask me I would say the catfish is the true sport in the Cedar, but, heck, you never know for sure what you could catch. Just to name a few... Northern, Walleye, Bass, Trout, Carp,Catfish, Bullhead, Sucker,Crappie,Sunny, and on and on. I love it up north, but I will never forget my days at the North Iowa Cedar River. And hey, Say hi to my pal at Barons rod shop. I have two of his custom made rods, he does nice work.Tell him hi from the mechanic from Lyle. I am sure he'll remember.
