Hey guys,

Just a neighbor to the south (Iowan) who remembers that a year ago today we were headed up for our 3rd bear hunt. We've had very good luck in zone 31, but decided to take the year off. I'm chompin' at the bit wondering how everyone has been doing. I know it's been warm this week, but a big cool down coming by Sunday so I expect to hear lots of positive results. Let's hear about your luck!

oh **** ! sorry knucklehead I forgot all about you. If I were you I would go north of McGregor up towards Big Sandy. There is a lot of public land there that doesnt get hunted TOO hard. Private land is going to be tough to come by, especially with bow season right around the corner.

Bears were shot off both my baits.

125lb dressed - Dropped hunter off at Noon, shot bear at 1:14pm

225lb dressed - Hunter in at 2:30pm, shot bear at 4pm

Buy Nordbergs book, it works. We had a 35mm trail camera (cheap $58 model) and got pictures of 6 distinctly different bears in 3 days at the site that was getting hit the least. I replaced the film and had 12 pics taken (all previous 20 pics had bear in them) the next afternoon when I went to take down the bait sign. When I get drawn next year (missed out in lottery - too many hunters, too few permits) I'm going to actually hunt a few nights or until the biggest bear on film from the camera comes in.

I have a question for Perch Jerker. Do the bears ever bother your 35mm film cameras? I have one I use for deer photos in bear country and haven't had a problem in 2+ years, but I've heard from a few sources that bears like the smell of the film and will tear apart the cameras to get it???

PerchJerker,

I just had a bear rip my camera right off the tree last month. The pictures are kind of neat--1st shot you see a black image off to the left (real close to the camera); next is hairy armpit (bear must have been up on hind legs); last pic is a blurry tan/black face right in the camera. When I went to switch film, the camera was on the ground with a broken strap buckle; but, the film and camera were not damaged.
