Dont know what the rules are on this since i have not baited for years..Use fish remains as a main sorce..we used to fill a 5 gal pal full..cut small holes in lid..cut small slits in bottum of the bucket and hang it in a tree just so a big bear could swing the bucket...bury a lil bit around it....when it rains the fish remains leaks onto the ground outa bucket...i kept several bears comming back on a daily basis for over a month..once you get the bears to come in like that then bait them with what ever to get a time frame down..to be honest all i added was oreo cookies and took plenty of bears..

To tell ya how long ago it was i now put a couple of those mounted bears in my yard to help pass the dead month of aug away..Entertainment to say the least..

Check with your area bakeries. Our local bakery sell us their broken/too small/mistakes.It's really cheap. Also we have a Wonder Bread thrift store in town.Them kind folks sold me a whole big rack of Twinkies,Ho-Ho's,Cupcakes,Ding Dong's ,etc.Very cheap!Another great bait/lure is resturant frier grease. Most taverns have plenty to give away.It mixes well with inexpensive dog food.
Good Luck!!!

I had a son working in a grocery store that got me a bunch of past date baked goods and fruit. But we filled the bottom of the bait pit with malted oats. We put it in buckets in the sun and soaked it with water. After a few days, it sprouts and you can smell the fermentation. Then we soaked it liberally with stock grade molassas. We got the oats(cheapest grade they had) and molassas from a small town elevator that dealt in cattle feeds. The smell carries a long way in the woods. Also we got some cheap reject honey from a bee keeper and smeared it on a nearby tree so the wind would carry the smell. Some bear clawed the snot out of that tree.

CMWINTER - Don't know where you live but there is a place in Cadott WI called V&C Distributing that sells bear bait by the barrrel. You can get anything you could imagine - jams, chocolate, cereals, cookies, liquid smoke, pudding, gummy bears - thats just a start. Best bet would be to bring a trailer. He also has great deals on dog food. If interested, the number is 715-289-3320.

I hunt just outside of Voyagers National Park. Last year we tried something different in years past. The secret was outwhen pit after pit was simply gone thru and logs thrown about. Go to an asian resturant and ask them to save the grease from cooked pork and rice. They went nuts over the stuff and had a successful hunt.
