Nels
Has anyone ever had one of these "real-gamefish" mounted? If so, what was the size, and what reactions have you have you gotten for actually getting it mounted.Would you ever get one of these mounted? Thanks. Guest
Nels,I’ve never heard of anyone getting one mounted. Most Carp anglers prize a good picture rather than stuffed trophy. However, I know you can get a fiberglass replica made of any size fish you want. Just look on-line for more info.Jim C.P.S. They usually need a photo, but I think they will some times do it from specifications if pic’s aren’t available.
vern
I heard Dan Gapen, the legendary "river rat" has a big carp on his wall. I've also seen a big channel cat mounted at the gas/bait store in Rockville near the Horseshoe Chain. That's a rare mount to see too. If I catch an obvious state record rough-fish of some kind, I'd probably mount it. I think it would be cool to have a record carp, buffalo, quillback, redhorse, etc. on the wall. Uncle Grump
This is a little "off-topic" - but I have ahead mount of a 56# flathead catfish I got got in Missouri a couple years ago.It was freeze dried, and is mounted on a "deer" sized oak board. It was done with its mouth open. I later had a small sunfish done, and added to the cat head, so that it looks like the sunfish is lunch - sunnies fins are flared like he's trying to get away, the kittys gills are open - mouth spread wide, and fins are flared. Its hanging from the wall in my office at work, as my wife doesn't like mounted fish.I got both mounts for about $225-250 - but the taxidermist told me he screwed up bigtime on the catfish, as he way UNDER estimated the amount of time it needed to be in the freezer.I got the idea for the head mount from my wife's brother, as he had a big N pike done this way. I could see having a big carp done - say 15-20# or more.UG
Guest
Grumpsounds like a good deal to me.I'm C&R all through, as most brits are. However a guy i read about here recently found a recently dead 16lb bream ( bit like a Sheephead, but no spikes and fights like a wet paper bag. ) that would have been a record fish if caught. It cost him £2000 ( about $3,200 ) to have it stuffed, mounted and cased. God knows what it would have cost to have the brit record 61lb carp mounted! Crawlerman
Wow. Taxidermy is a LOT more expensive then in GB than it is in the US. I think I got quoted around $200 on a 12lb channel cat; which I didn't get mounted but was just curious to see what it would have cost me to have it done. Replicas are compreable to that. I know, yeah.. saltwater fish are going to cost a LOT more; espically the extra charges on shipping the dang things. But you could prally get something saltwater done and shipped for that price in the sates. So were talking that it's litterly 10x expensive to get a fish mounted in the UK than it is in the US? Interesting....
Guest
I think it depends on presentation - the price I quoted is for a glass cabinet mounted specimen, which is obviously going to bump up the price. There was also a bit of reconstruction needed since the fish in question was found dead rather than being a freshly caught one. To be honest its not a subject I know a huge amount about being a C&R man! There are also v.few people offering this service as a result of widespread C&R, and it tends to be a very specialised and thus expensive game.[This message has been edited by englishsteve (edited 09-22-2003).]
Chris Haley
If anybody knows a taxidermist that does replica mounts of carp, maybe they should hook up with english steve and you might have a new market to clean up on.
Roughfisher
WASCO Pro-line fish reproductions has a 32" carp in fiberglass for $128 US unpainted. They also have eels, drum, gar, sturgeon, and smallmouth buffalo. Any decent taxidermist could then paint the fish realistically, probably wouldn't cost over a couple hundred dollars.
