loc9fisher
i was fishing for carp on the miss. today and in a small stream dumping into the river i saw what i think was a bowfin. tried to get em on by sticking a crawler in his face but nope, once again the fish was smarter than i was.anyway, where do i start if i want to catch bowfins? where does one go, what do i use for bait or lure? can i catch them from shore or by wading the shoreline? is there anywhere around the elk river area or on the western edge of the metro area?any help would be great, thanks everyone.[This message has been edited by loc9fisher (edited 05-02-2003).]
Big_D
I have never intentionaly tried to catch bowfins so I dont know exactly how to catch them and where they are. I have caught many but it was by accident when I was fishing for walleyes and sunfish and stuff like that. You could probably catch them on lures they are a predator fish. They also are always surfacing on top of the water so some top water lures might do the trick. Thats about all that I know.------------------Big D
loc9fisher
another question, is there any way to target just bowfin, or would a guy be throwing lures and just hoping that an out of season fish doesn't bite?
ricqik
You can target and catch only bowfins without a bass or northern ever hitting your lure. I do it all the time since northern/walleye isn't open yet. Check out bowfinanglers.com.
