First-Ice Brook Trout

Tim Moore

Recommended Posts

I finally found safe ice in northern New Hampshire. Well, it was 3" thick and I was only in 18" of water. I checked my way out about 50 yards and that was the point when it started to thin out.

I had to drive a ways, but I eventually found a place I knew was stocked with brookies. It didn't take long to jig up a couple toads with a silver tiger Blade spoon. They wouldn't touch it with a worm on it. I tipped it with a white maki mino head and they couldn't resist. It's great to be back on the ice. Of course today is 40 degrees with steady rain.

Yes, they are impressive fish. Wish they had some of them here in Minnesota. Caught a 15" and 14" last year and that was good size for Northern Mn streams. I have heard of them up to 18" though in the streams. I think they are bigger out of Lake Superior (Coasters).

I made a couple more trips while filming for my show and landed a few more beauties. Still getting them in 18" of water on the silver tiger Blade Spoon with Maki mino head. I clipped two of the points off of the treble since we can't add anything a fish can ingest to trebles through the ice. We also did really well with the pink Blade Spoon. These fish are becoming fewer and farther between with all the pressure.
