I use my HDS 8 for ice which I suppose is overkill, but yes it can be done get the Ice Ducer from Lowrance. I have mine mounted in a 5gallon bucket with the battery on the bottom. It works great plus I run my Navionics Platinum Chip in it, excellent combo. I will find pic of my contraption full-41112-26870-imag0249.jpg

A little overkill perhaps, but is it possible to rig an HDS-8 to the portable ice kit?
It CAN work, BUT, you need an adapter from Lowrance in order to get their ice kit to work for an HDS unit. The hds 7 or larger units will not fit in the bag provided either.

Just buy the ice ducer and make up your own case. 5 gallon pail OR I just bought one of those Clam Electronic bags, fitted it with 3/4 plywood on bottom, mounted the battery holder and a ram ball mount to it and will plan to use that.

PTI-WBL is the transducer part number, better hurry they become hard to find QUICK!!!

Does the Elite 5 have a flasher style view? All the pictures I see of it shows GPS and chart style graph. I would like to get the elite-5 DSI for my boat and put it in a ice pack for the hard water. Thanks.

The elite DSI series doesn't have a flasher mode. The regular elite 5 (non-DSI) has a flasher mode.

DSI works great in open water, because you need to be moving to get good, clear DSI images. DSI will not work very well for ice fishing since the transducer won't be moving .... you will not get very clear images.
