Way too late now, but for future reference: Yes, that was still a Chicken of the Woods but a slightly less common variety. Officially it's a Laetiporus cincinnatus. It's often more pale in color than the more common COTW variety (Laetiporus sulphureus) and it generally grows out of the root system of oak trees which makes them appear to grow out of the ground at times.
