Lots of minerals in dirt.  Garden hose with a sprayer, tooth brush, cut it ouit.  Outer edges are the least woody parts, although that one looks pretty fresh. Butter, garlic, salt, pepper, and fry up.....15 minutes or so....depending on how small sliced or how much is in the pan. From there.....bruschetta, morning omlette, soups, toss with pasta, stir fry,  mexican....... if you have hippie friends....it honestly serves as pretty good meat substitute. Better than tofu ;)

Gotchya, yeah, I remember when I first saw them wondering what the heck that thing was as well. All the pics and descriptions show and tell of these "fannning" out chickens, but have never really seen a discussion specifically on why they don't develop into a more traditional looking chicken. Until the tree finally fell, used to see year after year, a bright yellow basketball sized brain that over 4 years or so, never "unfolded". According to current classifications it almost has to be a yellow pored sulphureus ...... have yet to see any "brains" with white pores. And speaking of falling trees.....this might not bode well for yours.

Ahhhh...you're killing me! I found very little chicken this year, and that bunch in the second pic is PRIME. I'll have to let others comment on the boil method. I piece it out, sauté in butter, and freeze. Re-heats well that way in my opinion. Remember your tree locations...they'll be back next year. And congrats on the great haul!
