Direct vent heater

Scott K

Question

Where is a good place to buy a direct vent heater for an ice house? What is everyone using? I would like a 15,000-30,000 btu propane heater. I had a 50,000 btu heater in my house, but it kicked on and off so much, that it wasn't very efficient.

I have been looking into the Empire heaters, but dang! They dont give them away! I see a lot of people are using the ventless heaters in their icehouses, campers, and hunting shacks. How safe are these? I know condensation is a bigger issue with ventless, but how about the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning? Are the ventless heaters pretty safe? I would be putting it in my hunting shack, and it isnt very air tight.

Who all uses ventless, and sleeps in their ice house? Any concern od carbon monoxide poisoning?

I personally would not sleep in a place with a ventless heater going, others may disagree, but I would not want to risk it. Just my 2 cents. I am however  planning to put one in my hunting shack, to augment the wood stove, mainly to warm it up quick in the mornings. It will be shut off when I go to bed.

I bought one a L & M fleet.  It is a Home(pride) or something like that.  Works great.  I have had many Empires in different fish houses and they are great too.  The one from Fleet was a little under $400 from what I remember.  Ventless heaters are junk.  Will rot out your windows and feels damp in your house all of the time.  Doesn't help to crack a window cause then the junk heater just runs more and creates more water in your house.

And many people get headaches from them.  I get a stuffed up head like I am getting a cold from them.  I think sometimes it turns into a cold from breathing the fumes and humidity.

The one I bought at Fleet is a direct vent  I forgot to say that.

I currently have a 55,000 BTU direct vent heater in my shack, it heats up to much, and it will kick on and off every couple minutes, causing it to burn way to much propane. I just found a used cheap, smaller one on line, it is only 15,000 BTU, so I hope I didnt go to small. Although I have a Big Buddy heater, and it will keep it decnt in there until it gets below zero. I guess if it isnt enough, I can run the Big Buddy heater on low to help, then next year find one a little bigger. I was looking for a 20,000-30,000 BTU, but I couldnt find a used one.

Bought my Empire direct vent from Fish House Supply. A sponsor and a lot cheaper than my local propane dealer. Heats my 6 1/2 x 12 wheel house with no problems.
