Pellet Smokers/ Grills

Recommended Posts

i thought I would try to tap into the wealth of food knowledge on here! I've been kicking around the idea of getting one of these. I've looked at quite a few different ones, but don't have any first hand knowledge with them. Any reviews or opinions out there? So far I think I'm leaning towards a Rec Tec, but like I said I'm open. Thanks in advance.

I have 2 of them. A Traeger at my cabin and a Louisiana smoker at home. If you told I could only pick one I would take the Louisiana for sure. It gets a lot hotter for all around grilling and pizzas ( burgers , steaks...). Don't get me wrong the Traeger is a very nice smoker (actually prefer to smoke in that one) but as a grill/smoker the Louisiana gets my vote.

I have a green mountain smoker/grill, I love the ability to set it to a more precise temperature than just low mid high. My brother in law just bought a traeger and never asked me a single question about what I like about mine, which is the temperature control

Anamod- how long have you had them and do you use them quite a bit? We are looking more for a grill type not necessarily smoking as I have a really nice electric smoker. Just sick of gas grill and wife doesn't want hassle of charcoal so trying to meet in the middle.

Picks- do you use it more like a grill? What does he think of the traeger? It's funny to me that he didn't ask any questions , heck here I am asking strangers for advice!

Thanks for the replies guys, I appreciate it

you don't know my brother in law.......

Yes, I use it as a grill and as a smoker too, about equally. I learned early on that using a pellet grill as a grill you need to allow for more cooking time. I usually grill at 450* if I am doing chicken or burgers. If I am making pork chops, I will start them at 250* for about an hour or so and then crank the heat up to 450 to finish them.

I have a Memphis pellet grill/smoker.

I got it about 3 or 4 years ago. Absolutely love it in every way.

Temp range is 200-600. I smoke turkeys, pork butts, or whatever. Works fabulous for grilling any meat you want as well.

I would love to get one for the cabin, but they are a bit pricey to own more than one of them......

I bought a traeger junior elite last spring. For smoking or low and slow cooking it works great, grilling not so much. It just doesn't get hot enough. On a hot day I struggled to get to 400 degrees. On cooler days like we are having now 300-325 is about all it will do.

I want to get a Green Mountain Davy Crockett. It is the small portable grill that works on AC or DC. I can still get two racks of ribs on it. Even though we usually only do 1 rack at a time. Will be fun to have while using our camper. Still working on the permission thing. I think she is weakening. My brother is at the dealer right now getting the Daniel Boone medium sized one. I am so jealous.

Just been watching a lot of youtubes of them today...
