leech~~
We have hunted spring Turkey's mainly on field edges in valleys and hill tops for about 10 seasons down by Houston, MN and did pretty well. This spring to mix it up and give us more of a challenge we put in and got tags for area 508 which will be pretty much all woods. We had seen a good amount of birds in the woods during Deer hunting last fall, but know they were mainly going after acorns. Since there really are no fields around there that we know of? What to scout for? Any openings, clear cuts.....?
Powerstroke
If you know you've got birds in the area, look for roosting and dusting spots. Look for any small opening you can find. In wooded areas, the birds will use the roads for easy visibility and traveling. Locater calls along a road can be a great way to pinpoint birds that are wandering in the timber. We know the area very well as we have Bow & Rifle hunted it and snowmobile & Dualsport bike rode through it for about 16 years. The last few years we started seeing a good number of birds, so since we were getting a little bored and tired of climbing hills down south. We thought what the heck lets give this a try. I'm thinking we need to get up there a few weekends before and do some morning Crow calling and see if maybe we can pin point a starting area? But, it's a big area! IlliniWalli
a few weeks before the season, slip into the woods or even sit in your truck and listen for the toms to gobble to locate their roost areathen slip in quietly before daylight close to the roost and watch them fly down and see which direction they head. that will give you an idea where to set up once season comes in.i dont scout too far ahead of the season because i have places where i see lots of birds during deer season but they arent there in the spring. turkeys can roam quite a ways looking for food in fall and winter but usually return to traditional roosting sites in the spring.but some turkeys roost in the same general areas year round.
