Talon vs Power Pole

I know this topic has been beaten to death on other sites but just wanted some of your guys opinion. I currently have an 18' Ranger Bass boat and really want to add one of these shallow water anchors. My questions are:

1) Pros and Cons of both

2) Do I need two or can I get by with one

3) What length would you recommend?

I apologize in advance if this topic has been covered before! Just need a little input before I purchase! Thanks for all your help!

A put on a new 10' Talon last year and love it. It may be a little bit louder than a Power Pole but I'm ok with that. You can install the Talons yourself with ease. I'm also not a big fan of having hydraulic fluid in my boat. I really like the look of the Talons as well, they are a lot cleaner looking compared to the PP imho. You could get by with an 8'er but a 10'er comes in handy at times, and I think just getting one is fine, you can always buy the 2nd one later if you think you need to.

I know I didn't really give any pros for the PP mainly cause I have not had one. I'm sure some other guys that run one love them as much as I like my Talon.

Hester:

Thank you for the information, I really appreciate! I am leaning towards the Talon! Do you have a jackplate on your boat? I do not and I think this is going to add to the difficulty of installing it myslef... Also, did you buy the tilt bracket for it? Thanks again for the help!

I do have a jackplate, and I used a sandwich bracket to mount it on.

I do not have a tilt bracket for it, I have the newer model Talon and it is only a couple inches higher than my motor. My buddy has the older model talon and they are a bit taller, he needed the tilt bracket to get it into his garage, he really likes the tilt bracket and it comes in handy on the water at times.

I have the 12' Talons on my ranger r83 and love it. I have a jackplate so installation was a simple bolt on. I do not have the tilt bracket and it has not been a problem with my style of fishing, but I may get one eventually just in case.

The main reason I went with a talon is price. Talons tend to be cheaper than power poles if you shop around.

The only con I have about the talon besides the noise is that sometimes it can get in the way of the back boater, whereas power poles fold out of the way when deployed.

I am looking at getting a 12 foot talon this spring, I don't plan on getting a tilt bracket either. My only concern is that my jackplate is older so I'm not sure if I will be able to just bolt it on or if I will have to have a shop pull the motor off to put the bracket between the jackplate and motor. Do they use a lot of battery to run, I was gonna hook it up to my trolling motor battery.

i bought a new 12 ft last year and mounted it on my 618t. i bought the mounting bracket( sandwitch) for it but i did not move my motor back, instead i machined the bracket and mounted it to the side bolts that hold the motor on and it worked awesome. the talon has a great warrantee also, the pole is life time and the unit itself is 5 years. it uses little power to operate.

If you are putting it on a bass boat, you have to get a bracket that attaches to your jackpkate or a sandwhich bracket that goes between your jackplate/motor and transom. Other than installation location, they are basically the same functionally. I put mine on the port side, mainly to counter any weight when I'm in driver seat. Not sure where other guys have theirs.

i would recommend the 12ft talon. this will get you into the midrange anchor and be able to anchor in most fishing conditions. better have the longest and not need it than to have an 8ft and want to anchor in 10fow. i also got the talon for ease of installation onto my jackplate and lack of space in my boat.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
