fishcast
I have some old ht rod storage half soft half hard cases that are about ten years old and falling apart after lots of use. I'm looking for a heavy duty option (full hard sides ideally but willing to look At others). What are the best options you've found? At this point the hard sided case by otter looks to be my best option. Kinda spendy, but potentially worth the investment. I've been looking at some cheaper gun and bow cases but they don't seem to be offered in very ideal sizes for ice rods ... Opinions on otter case or other ice rod cases or other creative suggestions are appreciated!
guyonacouch
I've used cheap gun cases for the last couple of years and they worked well to protect the rods, but I got tired of breaking down and reassembling my handles every time I wanted to move to fit my spinning reels, so I bought the Otter case and have been really happy with it. It fits 6 rods pretty easily and I've had 8 in there, but it took quite a bit of time to get it all organized. I got mine on sale for $60 so they do occasionally drop the price, but I would probably be willing to pay the extra $30 to get this case because I do like it a lot. I also have an MTM ice fishing rod box and it does an OK job of protecting the rods, but is kind of a pain to put rods in and take them out because the padding doesn't really hold the rods. Ice fishing innovations has a really nice rod box too, but it is a bit larger than the Otter case and is also pretty spendy.
gonehunting
Check out the Big C stores tundra bag. It is the same as the Clam Ice Rod Locker. It is like your soft bag but has hard inserts to make it rigid. I am in the same boat as you. I would like a hard case where you don't have to fold down handles but is not huge like a rifle case. The otter box is nice but just too big for me. The Tundra fits at least 8 rods up to 36" in length. On sale now also. I've been very impressed with it.
