Winchester SX3 20 gauge

Recommended Posts

I'm considering purchasing a Winchester SX3 20 gauge. My grandkids are getting interested in hunting and shooting. Not to mention that I'd like a nice 20 gauge auto for the grouse woods. Mostly I'm concerned about reliability and recoil. I'd like to start the kids on a light recoil gun. Any comments would be appreciated.

Not sure about recoil but I have a buddy (Shawn Stahl Fowl pursuit videos) that shots a SX3 12 guage but he claimes he hasn't cleaned his gun in 4 years and it has had thousands of rounds and lots of grit and grime run through it. It looks like hell and still keeps on going..

I used to have an SX2. Got to be a little heavy walking an entire weekend pheasant hunting. It was an excellent gun but the miles I put it over a weekend warranted something lighter.

I've since added 2 Benellis to my collection. An Ultralight 20 ga and an M2 20ga. Both extremely light but more $$than the SX3. IMO very reliable, more suitable for younger hunters and minimal recoil.

I bought a used SX3 12 gauge a few years ago and I've never had a problem with it. It's been extremely reliable from duck opener to the last day of the pheasant season. The recoil is lighter than an 870 but probably not a light as other options.
