Whitefish Chain

BDR

Recommended Posts

A few years ago I used to vacation there. We used to have a great time topwaterfishing anywhere we could find Pads. Mostly stuck to the smaller waters. The channel to Dagget and Dagget itself was always entertaining. Good Luck!!

Try the south end of Cross lake. Dagget and pine are a good choice and fish them all the way to the end, or start at that end. I believe the lake is arrowhead, it is way on the other end of the chain. It is full of pads and if the fish are shallow a jaw breaker or a frog can be a blast. Lots of docks and outside weed lines to fish. A guy really needs about two weeks to fish the chain good. Have a good trip. Flip

I'm going to be fishing the Whitefish Chain for the next three days and have never even seen the lakes - let alone fish it. Can anyone familiar with the lake give me some suggestions on baits/patterns/general locations to try at this time of year?

There are very few docks in Arrowhead, maybe a dozen, dozen and a half tops. Most of the lake is wild rice with the pads only around the first 1/4 of the lake, then all rice. The lake is loaded with hammerhandle pike so be prepared to catch a lot of those.
With this cold weather and low water temps, I would not bother working the rice, save that for when the water is in the mid 70's. For the distance you need to travel to get there, it's really not worth it with much better fishing closer to you.

I would stick to docks on Cross, Loon, Bertha or the shoreline on Upper Whitefish.

Good luck.

Tom is right about docks!!! But, Arrowhead holds ALOT of bass in the shallows. Go all the way accross to the north end I think,(my directions could be wrong) but it is accross from the channel entrance. The docks that line the shoreline before you get to the entrance to Arrowhead are on the edge of a deep drop and hold some piggies. Whitefish also is a favorite for weedline fishing with jigs and worms. Pig has a great point coming out that has a great weedline. The docks on the whole system hold lots of quality fish. Pine a Daggot have great deep weed fishing. You can very easily fish three days with out seeing the same water twice. Cross is my personal favorite for deep weedline fishing.

Oh and another thing about docks. If it's overcast, have a spinner bait rigged up for chunking between docks. During early morning or overcast days the bass will pull away from the docks and cruise between them. Swimmers will also push bass away from their favorite docks and load them up on the next dock down.

If you aren't skipping under at least two sections you're not doing it right either. Get as far back and under the boats as you can.

Yea, I know Chris, but what I am saying is that NOW, THIS WEEKEND, with the water as cold as it is those bass will not be in the rice on Arrowhead, and that was the info the guy was asking for.
