Rod for flipping/pitching milfoil pockets?

Do most of you guys use 7 1/2" flipping sticks for this type of fishing? I need to get a new rig but am not sure what would work best I took a break from muskie fishing on Tonka last to pitch to some openings in the foil and had some success. Generally speaking what size pockets do you find the fish in? I was pulling them out of pockets 3-5 feet in diameter. Also pitched to some small openings about a foot across with no success. After 4-5 years of concentrating on muskies I've been hit with the Bass bug again. Any insights would be appreciated.

I use a 7 ft MH Avid series St. Croix baitcasting rod for when I am pitching. It has worked great. The guy at the St. Croix rod shop in Park Falls Wisc. suggested this rod for pitching and flipping; he said that this is the rod a lot of the guys use in many bass clubs in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Overall it is a stiff enough rod for pitching and flipping into the thick milfoil and being able to haul those bass out of there without loosing them.

On the rod I have a Flueger Trion baitcasting reel spooled with 40lb test Spider Wire Braided line. This line will also help getting the bass out of the weeds.

7 to 7-6 MH or even H action. I use a 7 foot heavy action with 17-20lb. mono for one rod, and a 6-6 Mag Heavy action with 50lb. braided on the other. The 6-6 is short, but the mag heavy action makes it feel like a broom handle. Lots of leverage for hoisting out of the thick stuff!

I like a 7'6" rod for the foil and most flipping and pitching situations. As far as which holes to pitch to. When the sun is bright I usually concentrate on the small pockets. When it is overcast out I go to the bigger holes.

I have a cheap 7'6" Intrepid MH, with 12/50 Power Pro. But I use it for topwater slop action. What am I thinking? I guess I like the longer rod so I can toss out my topwater frog a country mile, and the added length with heavy line allows me to haul them in even with 10lbs of weeds.

I really need to get into pitching the foil. Oh well, I have to get another rod I guess. Oh the burdens of fishing - LOL
