Do people use cb radio's while out ice fishing? I have a cb in the drop down and wondering if I will get use out on the lakes or take it down after deer hunting? If you do use it what channel is used most?

In the good ol' days (mid 1990's), we used them on Mille Lacs before cell phones to tell each other what was working bait wise, if we were catching anything, if the CO was prowling about on his snowmobile, and to tell each other when dinner was ready. We had a group of four of us that always fished as a group.

One time me and another guy got stranded out on the lake after a bad snowstorm in January of '96. I had 4' drifts around my truck and as far as I could see and we were about 3 miles out of Cove bay. Luckily I also had a high powered CB in my truck with a Firestick antenna at the time. I got in my truck and started calling on the CB and got someone on 169. They called my wife for me, who was able to call my employer and the wife of the other guy up there with me. Long story short, we were rescued off the ice by guys on snowmobiles from a resort the next day. Pre-cellphone, those CB's saved our butts.

Today, I don't know how many guys use the CBs. I haven't used one for at least 8 years. Pretty much text message now.

Cell phones and texting are nice, when they work. Where I hunt and some lakes I have fished (LOW is a good example) I do not get cell service. Plus I thought it would be nice to talk to other people on the lake during the evening down times to talk about the day. Maybe I am getting old... Still look forward to the evening talk sessions after hunting. gosh, I am getting old..

I just don't think enough people have CB radios to make it much of viable option. I think there is a better chance for VHF, but that's really only people with boats. I've never seen anybody with a radio on the ice other than one of them walkie-talkie jobs.
