Jig fishing in mucky lake

For dark water use a dark jig, they show up the best with low visibility. Dark blue or black is good. Use one with a rattle and when you hit any type of structure shake it a few times to get the rattling going - similar to a crawfish trying to hide under a rock or rubbing up against some wood.

I fish lakes up north with areas and streams that get very silty/peat boggy. Trying a carolina rig might be a good thing to do to see if it helps at all, or fishing less disruptive presentation like a worm or tube jig not very heavily weighted.
But I agree with trying rattles and dark colors as well. Experiment and see what works best. Depends a lot on the lake.

Hi folks,
My home lake (Cedar in Rice Co.) is a mucky, murky lake. I often hear about jig fishing and want to learn this technique this year. One question I have is that it seems to me that my jig and pig will disappear into a cloud of silt whenever the jig hits the bottom or if I drag it through weeds and other cover. Will the jig still be effective or is a Carolina rig to keep the bait above the silt cloud a better option for this type of fishing? If the jig will work, what size and techniques would you use for a shallow water attack?

My lake does have a couple of spots that a jig could work. A rocky point is one. A milfoil bed is another. And several of the islands have downed timber in the water.
Thanks for your advice.

In Dirty water just put that jig as close as you can to any visible cover and they'll smack it. Stick with black and blue, it will produce anywhere in any water clarity. Some orange spike-it on the very tips of the trailer can help add some realism too.
