Light bite light jig?

Fished a lake with a friend a few weeks ago and the bite was good, we each got a limit and we threw back some too. He was using a heavier jig than me and was doing a little better than me.

We went back to the same lake and the bite seemed off-what bites we got were very light again I had a lighter jig on but this time I out fished him about 6 to 1 ( he has a long streak of getting the biggest including a 15'' on an ice fishing trip ) So is this a pattern, light bite light jig? BTW we did not use bobbers.

What I found is that if the crappies are feeding near the surface the lighter feather jig works better but if they are near the bottom a heavier jig works better. I have also encountered stacked crappies and the heavier jig will produce the larger fish in the school as I have found the bigger ones lurking below the smaller fish in that bunch....my experience anyways.

Best performance includes lighter line with lighter baits. It is possible to fish the bottom in 20'+ depths with 1/48th and 1/64th oz jigs and no added weight, but it takes 2# test line. 6# or 8# are both too heavy to get the lure down.

heavier bait allows heavier line and often takes bigger fish.

lighter bait requires lighter line and often takes more fish.

lighter bait and lighter line connects better when bite is tentative.

All rules subject to fail at times.
