If my boat was strictly used for fishing where I am likely to use the trolling motor, I might not remove it ever. But, since we go out water skiing and tubing with it, and night-time river fishing for cats (both cases the trolling motor is just dead weight), I end up with it off the boat more than it's on. I also got a second one so I could have headlights for night fishing for catfish that don't have to be on the boat all the time (for the same reason -- they're just in the way when I'm not using them).

I mostly only remove mine whenever I put the cover on. I do occasionally remove it if my boat has to sit somewhere overnight that I don't trust - even with the lock I have on mine, they are just too easy to cut for someone really looking to steal something. The other nice thing about a mounting plate is if you do actually break something or plan to upgrade, the motor is really easy to slide off and at least with my Minn Kota, they are a universal mounting bracket so I didn't need a new one when I replaced my old power drive with a new Terrova. I've just got the cheapest bracket ($50), and it seems to work good for me.
