second rod

half-dutch

I think Eagle Claw makes those line out alarm reels. Sort of hokey they way they work. An actual baitfeeder reel would be a better option for sure.

Also, just for clarification, you can use 3 rods on WI border waters if you are fishing on the WI side of the river.

I saw one of those in action down on the Mississippi recently or rather in inaction. Looks to me like someone is more in love with playing around with the tackle than fishing. Personally I don't see what the point is beyond having expensive toys to play with and show off. One rod per person and there definitely is no point that I can see.

Like a bonus tag for deer. 10 bucks for a extra line in the water license that sounds fair. Bro inlaw and I were fishing carp yesterday between the 2 of us I had a bait clicker for him and I was using my bass baitcaster with the spool released. Daughter was a hassle so I just stopped and let my bro fish made me realize 1 rod is enough 2 is enough I cant imagine trying to watch 3 4 5 6 7 rods at once we both were getting bites just no hook up and runs as often.

2 is enough for one person if the fish are biting. The slower the bite the more rods I'd want and spread out to cover more area. I'm still fishing 2 rods if the game warden comes I'll play ignorant and say I thought the laws didn't apply to carp wink

Where I'm fishing if you don't grab the rod pretty quick the fish will be in the weeds or brush so I gotta watch the lines pretty much 100% of the time a strike alarm would be nice. Someday I'll have those nice ones the Europeans use.

My friend was ticketed a couple years ago for fishing two lines for carp.

The fine was around $130 and they told him if he's caught again he loses his fishing license for 5 years!

Yikes! I thought $50 sounded a bit too lenient.

That makes no sense???? They call them rough fish. They have tried to eradicate them every which way. You can use them as bait for other fish. There are no size limits or quantity limits. A guy told me yesterday that he and his friend used to seine net them in another lake. Yet they will fine you for using two rods??? Fine if you are using something that could catch other fish but I'm using corn, to my knowledge nothing else eats that.

Yeh I'm sure most of the DNR and fishery biologists would agree with you on that, but the trouble is how do you write into law, and enforce, an exception for carp and say perhaps cat fishermen as well?

How about two rods for bottom fishermen only? Well, don't some musky and pike guys bottom fish with cut bait? How can a CO prove in court you were fishing for something other than carp or cats when the rigs and baits for game fish and rough fish can be similar at times?

So seeing that problem, no one in the DNR wants to write a law that would be very messy when it comes to enforcement, even though no one gives a hoot how many carp any of us would haul in on a given fishing trip.

I'm afraid it's either gotta be two lines for every species, or being stuck with the one line rule.

You can use them as bait for other fish.

Actually you can't... (use carp for bait).

As a born and raised Wisconsinite - I agree that many of the regs in MN are over-the-top. Not much we can do about it except continuing to push them to change the regs

I use a slip sinker, swivel and a 2' leader with a small hook with corn on it I leave my bail open the fish takes the bait and starts swimming I see the line going out and grab the rod and flip over the bail and set the hook.

I am literally like Quint in jaws. I'm sitting there staring at the line. I first fished with 8 lb low vis green line. Well I lost a lot of fish to break offs and the line was hard to see watching for strikes. Went to 12lb regular mono. Lost less fish but still too many AND I couldn't see the line good. Went to 25lb high vis like neon green line. Great visibility but it was so thick it casted like dump and liked to jump off the reel as soon as I flipped the bail to cast.

So on the advice here got new 7' rods, new reels, AND 20lb braid that is as thick as 8lb line and 17 pound clear fluorocarbon to use for leader material. So the braid is thin and dark and is gonna be a dam to see especially if the sun ain't shining brightly. I see some cheap strike indicators on hsolist I might try but in the meantime what do you guys do that use spinning gear and fish with the bail open that have hard to see line?

I been too chicken to try that open bail thing.I guess I'm afraid of loosing the big one if the carp chooses to run chaotic around trees.

The places I go which is 99% river when targeting Carp are usually full of trees, brush, logs in the water.Like someone else said on one of these carp threads, an open bail has its place in certain settings.Or something like that.

Here's an example of one one of my local spots.Beyond what you see here in the photo below, the whole shore line has all this interference. The trees, logs and emerging brush can go out in the the water 20 or maybe even 30 feet out like this sometimes.Open bail here?No way Jose.Bad enough the carp already wrap around trees as it is.

A second rod rule would be interesting if there ever was one.Having two rods going in these type of areas would probeley keep a guy busy and I would imagine being pretty fun. What happens when you get a double? Yeehaw!cool

I'm in a lake there is some interference which is why I gotta watch the lines. In reading I thought the best way to fish carp was the no resistance on the line when they take the bait. Cuz of them being smartand dropping the bait. Was why i fish like this. Tho I understand you can't do it in certain situations like yours.

I'll tell you tho seeing that lone zipping out, and sometimes they are really moving, then grabbing the rod and flipping the bail over, whew man that's fun!

I'm guessing the guys telling you that you need to leave the bail open are fishing pressured fish. No one (almost) fishes carp here so the fish aren't real weary of baits. Try using a circle hook, leaving the bail closed, let the fish hook itself. This has worked for me very well in the past.

try thinking of a baitfeeder reel .. okuma has few in about 40$ . this will let you set the reel in freeline with some adjustable tension and one turn of handle will bring the preset drag in play. but in snaggy places as in pic above i will go with bolt rig and QD reel if possible.
