So say a newbie wanted to give the dove thing a try this year, would I have any success heading to SW and trying to find them on the public land? I would obviously scout and try to get permission if I locate them on private, but its always nice to at least have somewhere you know you can hunt.

You may bump an occasional one along the edge of a corn field on public land, but your best bet would be to find some small grain stubble. Will likely have to be on private land, and is more common from Swift County and further north.
