Humminbird Issues

My bird 958cDI is two years old and up until now no problems. I use my boat every week. After a week of not using the boat I went out onto the lake. My unit runs well for a few minutes and and then it says I am only in 1 foot of water. If I am in 30 it says I am in 60 ft. If I go slow it will read bottom as long as I stay in less than 25 feet. Even then it freezes up every few minutes. It will not show fish or the bottom on the Down Image or

sonar setting. Took it into Reeds and they put the latest software onto it. No good. Checked all my wires and ducer. Called HBird and they say send it in for a repair costing $290. They told me this without even seeing the unit. Anyone have a similar experience?

Make sure your depth setting is at 100' and then see what you get. Some how I set mine at 35' one day and I was fishing lake superior in 65' and couldnt figure out why I wasnt getting a good read.

Check all connections are tight.

I took it off the Auto setting for depth and set it at 165' since the lake I am on has 150 foot water. It is running better but just wont read anything over 50 regardless of speed. The ducer looks to be positioned properly.

I cant believe they told you it would cost 300 to fix, Hbird's customer service is usually pretty good. Your ducer maybe going out, you could try buying a replacement transducer locally (check with their return policy if the new transducer doesnt fix it) and see if that fixes the issue

I resolved my issue. The ducer was bad. I replaced it at a cost of $155. The new ducer works so much better than the old one did. The old one never worked like it should. I can't believe the difference.
