Skids

Thinking of building 4x6 or possible 6x8 skid house and just trying to figure out how wide the skids should be? I've seen as thin as a 2x4 on edge to 8" to 10" wide. I'll be using it mostly while waiting for the ice get thick enough for my wheel house so the snow shouldn't be too deep yet but probably softer snow that will be harder to stay on top of. Hopefully it will be awhile before we see 10" of slush on top the ice like last season.

I used rough 2x8 on mine but the sharp ice chewed them up real bad in 1 year. I am going to have to rebuild this fall.

4 x 5 or 6 would be my suggestion. 2x6 don't work, I know because I tried. those things really take a beating, I had steel spreaders even on 4x5's.
