Odd shaped velvet antlers

Recommended Posts

I saw this young buck at Afton State Park this morning. His right antler's main beam bends down and almost backward at the start.

Notice how he holds his ears.

He didn't seem to have any type of injury. He has a bump where his brow tine would be. It is a very distinctive shape.

I'd be willing to bet a previous injury on or near the skull where the base of the antler comes from skull. More than likely it will grow the same for the rest of his life. I watched one on camera and from stand that grew much like that. The third year I watched him he was a beautiful 140" class 10 on his right side, but a fawn monster movie deformed 8 on his left. My cousin across the road ended up harvesting him that fall. At his deformed base, it was soft antler. 3 years later on a plaque, it's still almost pliable. I nicknamed him crook, yes, short for crooked.
