Grouse Broods anyone?

Recommended Posts

I'm encouraged with grouse in my hunting area west of Bigfork. In setting trail cameras on May 18th, I bumped a grouse off her nest.

Returning on June 13th I checked the nest and found all eggs had hatched and I ran into the mother with several of the little peepers about 50 yards away from the nest.

I ran into 3 different grouse mothers with broods within a half a mile that day.I think with all the snow the grouse had it good last winter. The deer on the other hand suffered. This is the second spring in a row where I have failed to pick up a fawn on my trail cameras. The area by Bigfork had such a severe winter I think the fawns died or were never born.

I heard more drumming than usual this spring in the Cambridge/Rush City area and flushed a few while turkey hunting in May. The DNR Grouse Survey for 2014 was published today and indicates a 34% increase in the northern part of the state. Did well last year getting two limits near Ely, hoping for a repeat.
