I own both reels in both the new and older models. IMO, when they revamped the president they took a big step forward, but for some reason, it feels like the trions got worse... They dont feel as smooth and they didnt upgrade the bail wire like they did on all their other models... I really like the trions as work horse and back up reels, but I have started switching to Shimano Sierras at the same price point (around $30) and have been happy.

If i were you, I would spend the additional money on the president or go with a Sierra.

Hi Mr Pike. I would agree with icefisker and either upgrade to a president or go to the Shimano SIENNA. I happened to have a Sienna 1000 series and heard lots of good things about them at the Sports show in March. So far, mine has been flawless. I keep waiting for something to happen to it, but it just keeps doing what I bought it to do. Bought the 1000 size for jigging. If you want one for cranks, the 2500 series should do fine. Don't think there are too many fish in the Hutch area that could wreck it. Well, maybe a great big "kittie" or carp could test it to the limit. Good luck with your choice.

hi except for bearing count is there a huge difference between president and trion. thinking of getting a trion in the 30 series still a good reel?

Not sure if this is helpful, but if you can find the old style Trions they are great reels for the price. I like them much better than Siennas.

I can't speak about the new re-designed Trion as I have not used one.
