Swing Tongue on Trailer with Brakes?

-Marc V-

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to do this as an after-market swing tongue on a trailer with surge brakes? I don't know how these trailers and tongue works but sounds like the brake fluid reservoir is in the tongue so would figure a swing tongue on this would be a no go...

Thanks for any info!

I don't have a swing tongue, but I have a removable tongue with Surge breaks. My break lines have quick connects like you would see on air compressor lines. The resovoir is in the tongue section that gets removed after the two break lines are disconnected and the lights are unplugged.

When I bought my boat (Shorelander Trailer) I didnt get the swing tongue right away (well actually I paid for it, but didnt get it, another story for another day) and it has surge brakes.

A couple years later I decided I really wanted the swing tongue so I contacted the dealer and the cost was $180 including labor.

You get a new tongue basically that has the "swing" piece added to it. Then your coupler and brake components are mounted to the end of it. In my case they didnt have to extend wires or the lines themselves. There was enough length there.

I will say when extended the swing tongue is a ton longer than the non-swing tongue I replaced. But when I swing it it fits perfectly into my old mans 24' garage.
