Volkswagen TDI Clean Diesel Jetta

Recommended Posts

Has anyone looked at these? They are claiming 42 mpg and over 600 miles per tank. I have to be honest, this really seems like what I'm looking for. I just don't know enough about these cars and engines.

I priced a new one on their HSOforum. Looks like a guy can get one before tax with a manual transmission at around $23,500.

We have a 2006 Corolla that we bought new. It has the 5 speed manual in it. The sticker says 41 mpg on the HWY and I consistently get 40-45 on the HWY (in the summer). I looked at getting a diesel when we bought this car but with diesel fuel, diesel option, and the maint of a diesel vehicle I decided it was much more economical to buy the Corolla. Just my 2c

One can be had cheaper than that with sun roof and a few extra goodies. We bought a 2013 before the mandated urea tank was put on.

Window sticker says 42, I've gotten as high as 56 (driving the speed limit). Yesterday we drove to MPLS and were seeing an "indicated" 49. This is still with winter blended fuel and temps in the 30's.

Granted that is indicated but have no doubts this car is more than capable of achieving over 50 mpg. Highways are where this car will shine. City mileage you'll be getting around the same as a gasser.

Love the car with 44K miles put on in the first year.

I own a 2011 tdi jettaDsg (automatic manual) direct shift gearbox

The best fuel economy I have ever got out of it was 40 mpg. This was going from the iron range to the cities and back (on one tank mind you) at 65 to 70. I have made a 500 mile trip on a tank ONCE. I usually get mid to low 30's in the summer, in the winter I dont keep track as I let my car warm up for about 10 mineuts before I go to work and work is about a 7 minute drive away (10 if I catch all red lights.) I drive my car like I should, hard. I accelerate up to the speed I need to and maintain that speed. I will admit for what it it its was the compromise I was looking for, torque, fuel economy, and looks.

Oil changes are due every 10k, oil and filter from vw 70.00 (tire rotation ever 10k too)

pollen filter every 20k, 20.00

fuel filter every 20k 45.00

Air filter every 60k 39.00

Transmition every 40k 372.00 ( for full service performed by vw)

timing belt is checked at 60k, if its bad they recomend replacing it, if good they will check again in 20k.

If your tdi did not come with fog lamps they can be installed for the tune of 840.00 for parts.

I do my own light maintenance, so I have saved some money. I change my oil every 5k or 6 months because I can. My vw dealer has been very good to me so far.

I will note that my model tdi has a known issue with the high pressure fuel pump failing, if it does you will be replacing the WHOLE fuel system. No if ands or butts. I do use a Ford certain booster in the summer and a Ford anti gel in the winter. I usually run number 2 fuel all season unless I know there will be a cold snap I will blend in #1.

The car does NOT come with a block heater. One from the aftermarket will cost about 500 bucks. I do not garage my car during the winter unless its really cold. I found out at 30 below zero the car will not start. (Air temp not including wind chill) you will have to crank on the car for a longer time but it will start in -20below.

Make sure to cycle the glow plugs every time when its cool out. Do not cycle them more then 3 time in a row then start the car, it will throw a check engine light and Dr rate the engine u ntill it is started again. frown

I like the dsg transmition, it has solid shifts and I like the fact that I can to some degree shift the trans manually (the pcm will not allow you to over rev the engine) max speed is about 120 or so I'm told wink highway corners are a little hairy at this speed, again I'm told.

You have to remember that you own a diesle, and that you CAN'T run gasoline in a diesle. If this accidentally happens DO NOT START THE CAR have it towed somewhere and have them siphon the fuel out and fill with fresh fuel.

I have the "premium" audio in my car with the touch screen. I like it although my only complaints are intermittently it will blast the audio u ntill I put the car in gear. Also using Bluetooth audio I cannot skip tracks via the vw touchscreen.

Yes I've had some issues with the car, but ill be darned to hear of one car that doesn't have any.

The Tiguan isn't available with the TDI....yet! Possibly for 2015 with the redesign.

The 2014 Jetta TDI I believe is the first year that uses the DEF hence the reason I pressed the Mrs into buying one before this was added.

Touareg is what I was thinking, Mistake on my part. 240 h.p. 406 lb-ft of torque.

I would love those numbers in a jetta with AWD.

I wounder if they are going to DEF to compete with Chevy, Mazda, and Porsche.

A Jetta with those numbers would be just plain crazy......in a good way. Especially with AWD.

The Toureg at one point offered a V10 TDI that really didn't offer much over any smaller engines. It was more of a "Look what I've got" type deals IMO.

As far as competing with Porsche, the VW Toureg = Porsche Cayenne. Same vehicle, different body for the most part. The VW is just cheaper by close to $10K.

What it has now is enough to pull a corvette that was stuck out of the owners driveway.

By The way, the tow hook is located in the tool kit, under the jack in the trunk.

gringringrin

I thought I was supposed to have a spot to put the tow hook for the Tiguan in the rear bumper but when I removed the cap, there's no tapped hole to screw it into. Really my only complaint on the Tiguan so far. 91K miles and running strong. Heck the front brakes are still at 90%, never been replaced.
