Braid Question

Recommended Posts

I normally always fish a copoly line. As I am expanding the different ways I fish and the different type of fish that I am fishing for I am noticing a need and place to fish braided line. So the question is when do you tie your braid straight to a lure or jig vs when do you use a floro leader tied to your braid.

Tie direct if in snaggy dirty water conditions. Personally, all my rods run 832 with a 6' fluoro leader. Tied properly, 10# braid and 10# fluoro will straighten any jig out. And I like keeping the weak point in the flouro and not in the rod.

I have noticed that when I tie my jigs directly to my Fireline I don't get as many pick ups as I do when I use a mono or fluorocarbon leader. I don't have any explanation why.

I only use it for frogging right now (tie directly). I'm thinking of using it on a spinning reel this year (mainly because you don't have to change it every year and I rarely use spinning reels now. Oh yeah, It might help with drop-shot sensitivity if I get that desperate).

I like to tie the braid direct to many of the cranks I fish and will do so when trolling and casting. When I jig I tie a floro leader and tie the floro to the jig. In clear water and slower presentations I run mono or attach a floro leader to the braid. The reason I tie direct is to improve the feel of what is going on with the lure and to decrease the amount of bite offs. A snap swivel to the lure will give it different action then tying direct and on somedays that is what the fish want, just a subtle change in the way the lure swims.

We are the opposite. I use a lot of braid (some flouro) and just purchased Co-Poly to try this year - never used it. I tie braid to my lures most of the time unless I'm in super clear water or it's a finesse application (but I've switched most of those over to full Flouro now).
