Ufatz
Anybody who has owned more than two Labradors knows of their strange habits and especially their strange dietary quirks. There are legendary tales of Labs eating strange objeccts. But we now have a little girl dog who likes to go out, find a nice little rock, and bring it in to chew on it. Some soft rock clusters she will actually take apart. She does not seem to eat them but of course my guess is that she DOES ingest some small parts. I've had them eat strange things but never rocks. Any of you guys run into this? Almost makes me wonder it she is lacking something in her diet. What do you think?
DOOM
I have a black lab/collie mix who would do the same when she was a pup, till about the 3 yr old mark. She is 5 now and I haven't noticed her do it anymore. She wouldn't ingest them to my knowledge. Now she's into eating her terds when I'm not looking, which is pretty common for most labs that I have owned. Best is when she gives your buddies a big sloppy kiss when they come over. rbs
My lab swallowed a ace bandage...all 10 feet of it and I had to pay almost $1000 to have it removed. That was when she was 2.
Ufatz
Oh man, that's the kind of story I've heard for years about Labs and I've always counted my blessings at never having a dog with a goofy habit, until now. I mean, I've had 'em drag weird things into the cabin and find strange things now and then and chew up everything from an oak office desk leg (MY oak desk leg!) to the inside facing of a door, to a pair of Russell boots $$$!But never, until this little lady have they brought rocks into the house, laid around and chewed on them and then left them right in the flight path of my big fat feet! Ouch!I once hunted with a pal who had a Chessie as tough as a tank. He liked to retrieve empty hulls when they kicked out of you gun when you broke it open.Just brought 'em to you and dropped 'em in the blind. Never looked at 'em again. What would we do without dogs! CANOPY SAM
Our "Bones" likes to chew on rocks. He doesn't eat them. Just grabs one out of one of our rock gardens and kinda drags it around for a while. I just found a handful out behind the house, melting out of the snow. Of course, as I picked them out of the snow, he wanted them back! Gets to be an issue during the summer, as he tends to start in on a rock, then walks away and leaves it out in the lawn, where I need to mow the grass! I always gotta check for rocks before I mow! Dumb dog! Bones doesn't seem to really chew on the rocks. He just kinda rolls em' around in his mouth and plays with them. My wife and I gotta weed the rock gardens a few times per year, and Bones is all over this job! We have to pick up a bucket full of em' out of the yard when we're done weeding the gardens! I don't mind. He's such a funny dog. His little quirks are really endearing. He's extremely loyal, loving, and protective of his family. He's an awesome dog.
