Reel/Rod match

Toying with the idea of buying a new spinning reel-one of the mag spool types, like the Pflueger Arbor or one of the Bass Pro Models. Question is-with that type of wide spool, do you need a rod with a large or oversized stripper guide to prevent jamming up of the line at that 1st guide? With some of the rod makers going to smaller, micro-type guides, like the rod I plan to put the reel on, I would hate to end up with a mismatch that doesn't work like I would want. Any ideas? Thanks.

Doesn't anyone have one of these reels that he or she has used for awhile?

Any issues at all with the rods? Just want to know before taking off for the Sportshow next week. Usually end up getting something there that looks real good at the time, but....

I typically have paired my rods with a shimano symetre 2500 reel which has a larger spool for longer casts. I have one rod with micro guides and it seems to me that I get less distance out of that rod compared to my rods with a standard set of eyelets. I assume this is because it has more eyelets and there is more friction on the line. just my 2 cents.

I have not tried the reels you mention, but a lot of older spinning reels had spools just like that. I would think you would be just fine with a standard spinning rod. I never did like small eyes on any of my rods. I'm not sure what your draw is to those types, maybe you just want to look for a regular spinning reel? I would look into Penn reels. A lot of them came back to the US this year, and I have had good luck with them. Another brand made in the US is Ardent. I have no experience with them though.

Thanks, guys, for the input. The rod I was going to put the reel on is a GLoomis GL2. I have a Sahara 2500 on it now, but it seems too heavy for the rod. That particular rod seems to have a rather small first guide and I wondered if that would be a real no no with a lg. dia. spool reel. It's a dropshot rod that I thought could do dual purpose as a walleye jigging rod, but I don't like the lack of sensitivity, esp. when dragging jigs. Maybe it's time to spool on some braid and see if that helps. Think Spring! Oh, I wasn't drawn to rods with small guides. I just happened to end up with a couple rods that have small guides. My next one won't.
