I'm trying to learn how to make a spear, and you've got some great info posted here. I do have one question. When you braze the two pieces together on the point, why doesn't it melt when you heat treat it? Most heat treating takes place a lot hotter than the brazing rod would melt at.

That depends entirely on the type of tool steel that you use. W1 tool steel is hardened at around 1500 degrees and brazing rod melts around 1700 or so, depending on the brand and actual alloy. Some steels certainly would not work due to the required higher hardening temperature. I hope this helps.

Well I'm sick to my stomach guys, my saw got lose while travelling and bounced around by the spear scratching the paint in the handle and one of the tines.

Terrible!

Waiting for 9tine to tell me it's an easy fix...

It will go in a rifle case from now on.

UGH

Jose,Sorry to hear that. That epoxy is usually pretty tough but those saws are sharp. The black on the handle and head is black epoxy paint supplied by VHT. I get it from O'riely auto parts. Smooth the scratches with 0000 steel wool and then clean with rubbing alcohol. Let it dry then follow the directions on the can. Be sure and cover the wood section of the handle. Good luck and don't hesitate if you have any questions.
