Humminbird 899 or 898?

I have read that the 898 will come with "better" external GPS puck and better transducer. The units are now similarly priced with perhaps easier connections on the 899. Which is the better unit and why? Also is side imaging worth the price and usable for finding bottom transitions?

I don't think you could go wrong with either one. I have heard good things about the 99 (899, 999, 1199) units. SI is definitely worth the $$. It's unbelievable how easy it is to see bottom transitions (hard to soft). I bought my first SI unit last year and will never go without one again. I still have a lot to learn but excited to see what this year brings and how much more I learn from SI.

Agree with the above. They're both excellent and it'd be hard to go wrong, but if the newer unit has features you think matter...go for it.

Bottom transitions are incredibly easy to see on SI. Really a remarkable part of the technology. Just as an isolated example, I found a gravel seam in the middle of a weedbed on a lake I fish frequently. Knew there was hard bottom there from seeing it on a 2D sonar but was hard to get the layout of the spot in my head. 2 or 3 passes with the SI and I had the whole thing mapped out with icons. It's a lot bigger and more complex than I thought it was, and it's a phenomenally productive bass spot.

I didn't fish walleyes a lot last fall (got my SI units mid-season) but I can only imagine how useful that aspect of SI would be if you're a walleye guy to any degree.

Reports are that the 899 does not transmit 800 kHz like the 898 does. The 899 also ships with the xnt version ducer, not as good as the xhs version that comes with the 898.

Personally, I would skip the 899 and look for an 998HD if they can still be found.

The 899 does transmit the 800khz but you need the upgraded transducer, it comes with the XNT-9-SI-180-T compact transducer. you can swap this transducer through Humminbird's exchange program for the HDSI (XHS-9-HDSi-180-T) for $75.00. The HDSI will give it the 83/200/455/800khz frequencies. This is what I was told through humminbird. Has to be unused transducer from purchase, also the 899 has a faster processor. I was comparing the same exact units

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
