Propame Tank Size - Freeze up

I often only use 1lb tanks in my big buddy heater but when it is well below zero degrees I usually carry the 20lb propane tank from my grill as a backup when the 1lb tanks start to freeze and malfunction. I don't like the bulk of the 20lb tank and was thinking about buying an 11 lb cylinder. Would the decrease in size lead the 11lb tank to freeze faster than the 20lb tank. I've held off buying the 11lb tank due to the high cost of the tank but am leaning towards buying one because of the nicer size and portability.

I have been running my Buddy when I use it always on a 10# cylinder and I have never had one issue with a freeze up in any temp with this set up. The 10#er is nicer than the 1# cans as it will last alot longer and the 20#er is alot heavier than the 10#er.

It does make a difference on freeze up if the tank is full or at 10%. The fuller tank will freeze up way less than a tank almost empty.

I do keep the 10# propane cylinder inside the house also.

Not sure where you are located in regards to the metro or rural but I have found 3 different 10# tanks at co-op's that sell propane for $15 each with the new valves. Beat's paying the full retail price if you can wait and have access to a few lp stations or co-op's that sell tanks and propane.

I'm not sure why the tanks would be freezing up while using them in your fish house. I have an insulated otter and had no problems fishing Devils Lake a few weeks back in - 30 most of the trip.

However there is a Neoprene cover that you can slide over the 1# tanks to help this. Most guys use these with the new LP power augers to eliminate the 1# cylinders from freezing up when its very cold out.

I bought a couple of these just in case? But have not needed to use them yet.

There $5 bucks , Called "Expedition Sportsmans tank warmer" here is a link to them.
