Walnut18
This is my first year with a permanent house out on a lake. Each time I go out I struggle to get the hole cut open again. I have a Strikemaster Lazer which seems to get stuck in the spear hole each time I use it. I also have an ice saw and chisel. I realize the hole won't be as big as I originally cut it as the winter drags on but does anybody have any tips to keep it decent size when reopening it? Thanks. terrible_fisherman
I start the year out cutting it much bigger then I actually need knowing I will loose some as the year goes on. I normally use a chisel and an ice saw to reopen each time. Once I loose too much of the hole, I move the house over an entirely new hole. It can be a pain to reopen a totally frozen over hole (if lots of ice) inside of a house so sometimes easier to just move the house.
Bowfin
I struggle through with an auger, saw and chisel just like you. I angle my auger holes out. If you use the house over several days the hole usually gets bigger. My advice - Open the hole once at the start of the season and spear every day so the hole doesn't have a chance to freeze over! MJ1657
My advice - Open the hole once at the start of the season and spear every day so the hole doesn't have a chance to freeze over! Good advice!! I just chisel mine open when I go out. Get yourself a good heavy chisel and its easy. I'm able to keep it the same size by getting it opened then angling the chisel to undercut the sides every so often. The other thing is make sure you have a hole cover. It makes a huge difference on how much ice reforms in the hole. I don't know if he is still making them but Behindthehead builds an awesome chisel that works perfect for doing this. hawkeye43
MJ, I didn't know you had one of behindthehead's chisels. I got one last year, didn't know what a good chisel was until then.He still has some now, when they are gone, I'm sure he will make more. It was at the bottom of the lake in 12 feet of water last weekend. It took a 12 foot expandable broom pole, ice saw, depth finder, 20 feet of parachute cord, and a roll of duct tape to get it out but me and the Sniper got it. That might be a little on the heavy side. Matt uses a grader edge with 1" shaft and a ball on top. The blade is sanded and sharped with a file. It blows the ice very well. I just weighted it at 16 lbs.
MJ1657
I took some pictures of the chisel this morning but it was to bright out and they didn't turn out very good. I'm on the road for a couple days so i'll take some when I get back unless Hawkeye could snap a couple of his chisel.
hawkeye43
Me putting pic here would be an act of God. I know everyone tells me its easy, but I am the kind of guy that has to be shown how to do a number of times and people in my house grow very ------ if I keep asking how. So until I get a 42" and really need to learn, it not going to happen.
