Sewer Mound Freeze-up

The other day on one of the the Twin Cities news they reported about a guy who invented some kind of a heater that attaches to your septic venting. it warms the air above the soup and helps keep it from freezing. Apparently it's programmable so it comes on when needed.

My input is based on a lifetime of country living. The freezing issues I've encountered have all centered around the septic tank inlets and outlets...never been privy to issues with the drain field/mound. Two neighbors with high efficiency furnaces had freeze-ups while away. The condensate drips and freezes right at the opening. I made a reservoir with a sump pump for the one so it puts 15 gal. through the drain pipe at a time. The other neighbor now drains the condensate into a bucket and has someone come in and dump it daily when they are away.
