Hello

I am a very novice spear fisherman looking for any advice that could help me. I want to go out on Maple Lake in Mentor MN and was woundering how do I even pick a spot to set my house where I will see fish. Please remember I am very new to this so dont make fun and any advice would be appreciated.

I hope I got the right lake, this is where I would start my searches on this lake look for the weed line off of these points to start and look for 6-10 fow I prefer about 7-8 ft my self, but to each there own. the arrows are not exact spots but a general area that I would start my search based on the map that I have to work with. Also a big weed flat will hold alot of pan fish and if there is panfish you will find pike sooner or later.

MJ1657 Info is spot on. Try to get map of the lake you intend to fish and look for drop offs from weedy bay's and points. Use you auger to test drill holes to try to see what actually down there. I put coat over head and look into water to see what there. This also can give you an idea of water clarity before you take the time to make a spear hole only to find 1ft visibility. Don't ask how I learned this. LMAO. Look to see where others are spearing or tip up fishing. IF nobody around look for blood stains near marked spearing holes or augured holes. I also ask local bait shop questions about what depths and structure etc and buy something from them whether spearing sucker or pop and candy bar for snack. I also suggest going through the posts there is a ton of information on here and ask specific question's lots of friendly spearing folk as well. IE: Gordie post

The price for this advice is you have to give us a report on how tomorrow turns out.

Spearing is an easy sport to take up. If they are running and you're in the right general area you will see fish.

Lot of great info in these forums along with some of the greatest guys on the ice you would ever want to meet.

Keep in touch and if you can try and hit up the late season GTG not sure where it will be yet, but I think it will be chosen after the first.

Remember to push your block back in the hole and always mark it.

Well I unfortunately have not made it out on the ice yet. I am FOR SURE going this Sunday so I look forward to using the advice you guys have given me and have learned a lot from reading the forum thank you guys for all your help. I have one more question though does it effect the spearing if you push your ice block under the ice. I have a house that I will not be moving until the hole has frozen solid so I wont be leaving a big hole in the ice, and I will mark it.

A lot of guys do it and they do quite well its a matter of choice. Just make sure you give it a good push and you should be fine.

I was told by a old timer that they actually melt because the water is warmer than the ice he never said how fast they melted just that they melted.

Last year after the holidays, I pushed a block under that had a sucker and harness in it. It was about 8" thick and by the third morning the sucker was laying on bottom about 12' out of my hole... So it melts fairly slowly. I can't say it has ever affected fishing. I always push in my block and I see plenty of fish.

      Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!

      we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.

      I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.

      reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
