sweeper33
Looking at putting new lights in my permanent house that would run off a 12v battery. Anyone have any suggestions for what I should look for and where to get them? Currently I just have 2 regular 12v bulbs, and they seem to be very inefficient and drain my battery real fast.thanks. Ben626
I was at Milaca Unclaimed Freight a couple of weeks ago. They had some nice LED Bulbs and complete assemblies from 10-22 dollars (I think). They are a ice castle Dealer so I thinks its the same they put in there houses. tsande00
You can look online on auction sites and other websites for an "E27" style LED 12v bulb. The "E27" is for the type of base. These thread into the same socket as your standard light bulbs and draw very little juice. I have a couple 5W ones. I use 1 in my 8X12, but two wouldn't be overkill either. The other I use in my hub shelter. They run about $5-$8 each.
BiggerJigger
Go with the LED. Even though they are expensive, they will save your battery.
centralmnguy
I just picked up two 12 volt CFLs at menards for $8.99...13 watt bulb is equivalent to 60 watt standard bulb...& more light spread than a LED...but LEDs will work & are more efficient in cold temps but cost twice as much. Chad Holst
We just picked up all the lights we are doing for our build. We got them from Jesse and jeff at ice Castles booth at the Ice show. the equipment side of the buisiness is called american surplus i believe. We ha them donated, but the cost would have been pretty reasonable being that we can run 8 hole lights, 3 20+ LED "area" lights,2 16 foot 300LED light strips all for about a million years on 1 battery. (thats an estimate) LED is 100% the way to go. Or you will end up wanting to run 2 deep cell batteries in Parallel and the cost of one extra deep cell batt is more than all the lights will cost you. We got our exterior lights (trailer lights and exterior area lights for above the outside door way, propane tanks, under wheel wells, etc) from a local Truck and trailer supply company. They also had lights we were going to use for the holes, and they would have been perfect still. License plate LED lights with a fitting that made the 90 degree bend from the wall to the hole. I think they were $8.00 for the light and fitting. The outside area lights we are using would be perfectly fine for the interior also, they were $10.00. Again All were LED.I cant stress enough how much power you will save from running the LED's. A regular incandecant bulb would use more power than all my LED's together, and we are putting TONS of lights in.
JSK76
I just picked up two 12 volt CFLs at menards for $8.99...13 watt bulb is equivalent to 60 watt standard bulb...& more light spread than a LED...but LEDs will work & are more efficient in cold temps but cost twice as much. I bought the same ones too and really liked them after putting them in this fall. I was out the other night and it was -11 outside and I just started the heater in the house and had the LED lights on and needled some more light so I pulled the chain on the light and flash, it burned out. I thought it was just a fluke so I turned the other one on and it was fine for about 5 min and then that one went out too. Great lights if you don't turn them on until your house warms up.
