So I have recently taken up targeting hard water walley. Does anyone have any info or tactics they would be willing to share that might me this winter. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

In addition to the lake map apps, use the MN DNR Lake Finder app or HSOforum, look for lakes that have high numbers of walleyes to fish, in lakes that are stocked fish the weedlines. In lakes that have natural reproduction, fish points, rocks, transitions. Use a jigging spoon tipped with a whole minnow, minnow head, or tail. On your other line use a plain hook and a minnow. Don't be afraid to use the biggest shiners you can find early in the season! Good luck.

shocked Thanks for the info...I do make use of the lakemaster phone app along with DNR maps and lake info. I will try the spots you mentioned and keep on doing what I'm doing and hope for some luck.

Thanks and good luck to you as well- smile

Hopefully it's okay with the OP if I add a question;

After you've done your research and found some good looking areas on the map, when you actually get out there and start drilling around, what kinds of signs or indicators are you looking for? With crappie fishing, I typically won't fish a hole until I mark fish on the flasher, is this how most approach walleye as well?

Maybe some do, I generally pick out a spot, be it an underwater hump, a saddle or a point and fish it for that evening. If nothing happens I move to the next spot the next time. Drilling holes I'll look for a weedline, and the top and bottom of the structure and note the depths of all those and with the thinking that they'll come from deeper to feed up shallower at night I'll have all my holes drilled so I can start in the deeper stuff and work my way in, or zig zag up the breakline. Lots of times I'll throw a tip up on the weeedline or at the bottom of the break and then move it in shallower when the sun goes down. Usually I start with the sharpest breaks.

During daytime I would just fish around the structure in the deeper water. Lots of times I'll mark a lot of perch during daylight then around sundown they dissapear and the walleyes move in.

I know that around the area I live in people forget about weed lines for walleyes. If you are fishing normal humps, bumps, sunken islands, sharp breaks, inside curves, and still not getting much check the weed lines. I like the jigging spoons as stated above, but make sure to have a plain hook and a minnow down as well. I have watched many walleyes come in to jigging spoons and eat the minnow on the plain hook more times than not.
