boXCar JiggY
Ok I know this has been hashed out before and multiple times, I need an auger for the best of both worlds, Perm house without smoking an greasing up the place with 2 cycle, so i thought electric or propane, propane in a kify 10 will spin ice an slush allover the house so theres the tub, have heard propane will set of detectors to. so I thought electric like SM bigvolt. heard good things about them very verital an a great perm hous auger. But I wanna take ports out on feild trip where electics might or will get to cold. Not sure what to do. any recomendations please.
ClownColor
Honestly...that auger has yet to exist. The propane may be your closest yet but electric is best for a perm but nothing beats a gas for run and gun. Pending your money situation get both if u can. Otherwise get a gas auger and just deal with the exhaust for a few minutes. People survived for years doing that. Just don't buy an electric auger as your only auger cause you'll find yourself dead on the ice...get gas first, used or new, then buy an electric or clam/drill/auger combo later. aanderud
The question has been asked dozens if not hundreds of times. (see your first line in the original post). Not trying to be a jerk, just offering some friendly advice here -- I suggest that rather than hoping to see a myriad of good responses to this specific post, and then waiting for said responses to slowly come in, you should look at the hundreds of recommendations and opinions that were given in those previous posts about the same topic. Lots of folks want a fume-free experience in their wheel house. There's more information there than you're ever going to get in this thread. Honestly, it's mid-season -- nobody came out with any new augers that haven't been discussed over and over already in the last 5 days or so. Take advantage of the fact that your question has been asked and utilize the information that's available to you right this second.
boXCar JiggY
So why even reply. Its a chat room if ya dont wanna chat on a topic dont reply, honestly. If ya dont like the music change the station. half the fun of being on a forum is just talking even if its been hash'd before or not. So one can give friendly advise without being a pompas silly-me. FishFindHer
Hey again boxcar! Like you, we don't want to deal with fumes in the new wheelhouse, so we've decided to go electric. Considered the big volt, but leaning heavily toward the Ion. (Don't have to worry about lugging a car battery out to drill a tip up, etc.). We don't anticipate doing many "field trips" (pretty much just plan to chill in the wheelhouse most of the time) so if that's important to you, definitely something to consider. What I did read on the ion, it sounds like the battery is pretty easy to pop in and out so if you can keep that warm in your truck, portable or whatever maybe that would work for you depending on what kinds of field trips you're planing. Also read they're supposed to be able to drill about 40 holes before you have to recharge, but of course I don't have any real world experience with them yet. So far it looks like people are pretty happy with them, so that's encouraging. Just sold our Jiffy so we have a little money to put toward the new auger. Man, lots of "upstart" costs to getting a wheelhouse...generator, auger, TV, etc., etc. lol. Hopefully it will all be worth it when we finally get out on the ice We'll probably bite the bullet on the ion this weekend. Hope to be on the ice next weekend, will let you know our first impressions of the new auger then.
FishFindHer
The only other downside is the ion doesn't have a 10" option. Might miss having a 10" hole, but 8" is perfectly adequate...a trade off we're willing to make for the other benefits.
Grum
The closest idea I can think of as "perfect" is an auger shaft that can be fitted with a hand crank, an adapter for an electric drill and one more adapter for a powerhead. I think Nils is the closest manufacture that sells an auger that is set up for switching between a hand crank and powerhead. IDK if there is an adapter for an electric drill, but you could have a machine shop fabricate one for you.

Cliff Wagenbach
I helped field test the Ion auger a couple of winters ago and swore that I would own one as soon as they hit the market!Bought one last fall!I rent out three wheel houses and also fish out of portables.Best money I ever spent on an auger! My Nils is still the best gas auger I ever owned though! While field testing we drilled 30 plus holes through 24" of ice on one battery charge and the Ion was still going!I have not been able to kill the battery in a days fishing in two seasons!Cliff
